Blue Tongue Disease – Identification Guide
1. Look at the Mouth & Tongue
Most important signs
- Drooling (excess saliva)
- Swollen lips
- Swollen or BLUE/PURPLE tongue
- (blue tongue appears in only 30–35% of cases)
- Mouth ulcers – white/yellow sores inside the mouth
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
👉 If you see swollen lips + drooling + ulcers, suspect Bluetongue.
2. Observe the Face
- Swollen face
- Red eyes
- Nasal discharge (watery or bloody)
- Dry or cracked muzzle
3. Check the Legs & Feet
- Lameness (sheep limps or avoids walking)
- Swollen coronet (above the hoof)
- Redness at the hoof line
- Sheep may lie down more due to pain
4. Body Condition
- Fever
- Weakness, dull
- Wool sheds easily (wool break)
- Weight loss
5. Unique Identifying Signs
These signs strongly indicate Bluetongue:
- Swelling of the mouth and head
- Ulcers in mouth
- Blue/purple tongue
- Lameness + swollen hoof area
- Excess drooling
If at least 3 of these signs are present, it is likely Blue Tongue.

- ORS Powder – 1 sachet in 1 liter water
- *Ragi Java (Ragi Malt) – 200–300 ml warm, easy-to-digest energy feed
Give 1–2 times daily based on weakness level.
⛑ PREVENTION
External Parasite Control (Midges, Flies, Ticks)
- Amitraz Spray or Dip – as per label dose
(This reduces biting midges → directly reduces Bluetongue spread.)

What This Condition Looks Like
Based on the picture, this is most likely:
1. Mouth Ulcers + Drooling (Bluetongue or Orf or Mouth Infection)
- When a goat has sores inside the mouth, saliva comes out and mixes with feed, turning it green.
- The staining is usually from partially digested grass stuck on wet lips.
2. Excessive Saliva (Ptyalism)
Happens when:
- Mouth is painful
- Ulcers/bleeding gums
- Fever diseases (Bluetongue, FMD-like infections, Orf)
3. Not likely to be a fungus
Because the spreading pattern looks like feed + saliva, not fungal growth.
🩺 Most Common Cause With This Appearance
✔ Bluetongue — VERY common, green drooling
✔ Orf (Contagious Ecthyma) — scabby lesions start around lips
✔ Severe Stomatitis — due to worms, fever, or infections
Green drooling + sore mouth = Bluetongue–type mouth ulcer issue is most likely.
